Liverpool will look to wrap up a deal to sign Victor Valdes next month when the Spain goalkeeper is fit to undergo a medical.
Valdes,
who is a free agent having ran down his contract with Barcelona, is
currently sidelined as he recovers from cruciate ligament damage.
Brendan
Rodgers, however, is an admirer of the 32-year-old and wants to bring
Valdes – who had been set to join Monaco before being left stricken in
March –to provide stiff competition for current No1 Simon Mignolet.

Competition: Liverpool are set to bring in Victor Valdes to compete with Simon Mignolet for the no 1 spot
Chase: Brendan Rodgers look set to finally get his man after fighting off competition from Monaco for Valdes
Winner: Victor Valdes has won the Champions League three times with Barcelona and will look for success
Safe bet: Mignolet is still Liverpool's first choice goalkeeper but Valdes will keep him on his toes
Show stopper: Valdes has appeared for Spain 20 times and will arrive at Anfield with international pedigree
Liverpool
have held talks with Valdes and he has indicated his desire to move to
Anfield but the move will not be made official until he has completed
tests on Merseyside in October.
There
is nothing to top other clubs coming in during the meantime to make
Valdes, a three-time Champions League winner, a rival offer but
Liverpool are confident they are in pole position.
Bringing
in another goalkeeper was the only thing Liverpool had not managed to
achieve during the transfer window, as they missed out on Michel Vorm,
who joined Tottenham from Swansea, and were beaten to the punch by QPR
to Alex McCarthy.
Bringing in Valdes, though, would ensure Mignolet is seriously tested and give Rodgers some vast-experience in a key position.
