Lakeside High School Principal Jason Clyne said O'Brien was part of the teacher development program, which works with students interested in a career in teaching.
"She built that program up from a small, two or three kids interested in it, to a thriving program because of her energy and enthusiasm and her passion for education," Clyne said.The occupants of the second vehicle, a 19-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. They were headed to Lakeside High's prom, police said.
O'Brien was a family and consumer science teacher at Lakeside High, according to the school's website. She was also a dance team sponsor.Police say 33-year-old Leah O'Brien was trying to turn from Ridley Circle onto Scott Boulevard in Decatur around 6 p.m. ET when her vehicle collided with another carO'Brien was killed. Her 8-year-old daughter was transported to the hospital in critical but stable condition.
