Ronaldo broke the stop following 57 minutes when his long-run shot cut Roma's Alessandro Florenzi before finding the back of the net.

Madrid weathered a late rally from the hosts before putting themselves immovably on course to achieve the last eight of the opposition for a 6th progressive season with a second objective in the end stages.

Substitute Jese was permitted enough time in the 86th moment to edge a shot into the base left corner of Wojciech Szczesny's objective, leaving Roma requiring a second-leg supernatural occurrence to advance.

With an excursion to the Spanish funding to come, and having surrendered 16 objectives in the gathering stage, Roma were justifiably unwilling to stand and exchange shots with one of the heavyweights of European football.

Their arrangement of sitting profound and playing on the counter just about worked before the break, however Stephan El Shaarawy neglected to out-run Madrid shield Raphael Varane when played through on objective.
