Patrick Reed won his first competition of the season at The Barclays to seal his spot on the USA Ryder Cup group.

Overnight pioneer Rickie Fowler passed up a great opportunity for a programmed Ryder Cup place in the wake of checking a three-over round of 74 on Sunday to complete joint seventh.

Fowler expected to complete third and will now would like to be a trump card single out Davis Love's group.

Reed, on the losing group at Gleneagles in 2014, said: "I need sweet reprisal, much the same as our entire group does."
