Court Orders Nigerian Pass President To Account For Recovered Stolen Funds

A Federal High Court on Tuesday requested the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to guarantee that his legislature, the legislatures of previous President Olusegun Obasanjo, previous President Umaru Yar'adua and previous President Goodluck Jonathan account completely for every single recuperated asset.

The Court sitting in Lagos announced that progressive governments since the arrival of vote based system in 1999 ruptured the basic Principles of Transparency and Accountability for neglecting to uncover insights about the spending of recuperated stolen open assets.

Equity Mohammed Idris made the request while conveying judgment in a Freedom of Information suit recorded by a non-administrative association, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

In a meeting with Channels Television's legal journalist, Shola Soyele, SERAP's Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, said the onus was presently on the Accountant General of the Federation working intimately with the Central Bank of Nigeria and other important associations of the administration to agree to the court's request.

"The data we got was that sure recuperations were produced using Abacha, some from Ibori and some other open workers.

"We are not ready to see. For Abacha alone it was around six billion dollars. In the event that such monies were recouped, we ought to have the capacity to see on ground where those monies went as far as uses.

"Disregarding such recuperations, there has been no genuine change out and about systems in Nigeria, not at all like change in the wellbeing offices in Nigeria, the power framework is still exceptionally senseless.

"That is the reason we believe that whatever happens, this is a majority rule government, you should tell the general population what going on. It is as basic as that," Mr Mumuni said.

One of such recouped plunders that Nigerians will jump at the chance to know how it was used is the plunder of a previous military pioneer, General Sanni Abacha.

The National Economic Council had in December a year ago said the plunders recuperated from late General Abacha was $26.4 million and £19 million as at November.
